Gillies Restaurant

Vegetarian Cuisine, Music and an Elvis Bust

Breakfast is a must-have at Gillies, a local veggie landmark and Hokie tradition

So, who can resist a great vegetarian chili? Or veggie breakfast? Mmmmmm. I know I can't. And you can get some of the best vegetarian food around at Gillies, a long-time staple of early morning eating in Blacksburg, Va.. And that's not all, because Gillies also does a great job of serving up art and music for the local community. And it does it as only a worldly, earth-friendly vegetarian restaurant can. There's always the ever-present bust of Elvis staring out the window, too. The King! Lonesome, gazing. Next to the hosue plants. Good times!

This sketch is unique one for me because I typically don't sketch at 11x16 inches -- but I figured it's time to work bigger. The format strays a bit from my normal fare. I tried to take full advantage of the real estate with some playful curves and lines. I'm trying to push myself a bit and find a voice that works. It'll be hard to work fast at this size, since I'll need larger pens and painting media. Working with smaller brushes and pens means I'll need more time to to cover the real estate of my larger page. But it's fun, nonetheless.

This building has so much character it hurts. I love the old-school windows, "mod" roof-top penthouse and the TV antenna. Fun stuff. That old red car was parked out front, too. How lucky was I to get that in the sketch? Yeh!
